Isn’t counting, one of the first things that we’re taught as children? Imagine a little child, who’s perhaps 3 years old. Imagine his wonder and innocence as he finds his way in this world. Imagine him in the midst of a small crowd of dear ones, being urged on by a doting mother to put on a show for them. Imagine him starting at “one, two, three…” and ending at a triumphant “den” and the audience bursting into jubilation while beaming mother and a proud father looks on. Imagine the joy that this little boy feels at being the source of all the celebration around him. Perhaps in his little world, he begins to believe that the way to bring joy to all those people was by counting to ten, or by singing a nursery rhyme. It is perhaps a world that we, as adults, build for him – A cocoon to help him grow. We fill this cocoon with fairy tales and gold dust, so that when it becomes his time to grow wings, he still retains some of that magic in his heart. Perhaps a boy cocooned in gold dust does indeed become a man with a heart of Gold. And in this world where a man’s worth is measured by the numbers in this bank account, perhaps there are a few men who still measure their worth by the gold in their hearts. Cheers
